The best timeline is one that makes the host available. Work backwards from when people will eat, and choose a menu with no more than one dish that needs attention at the last minute.

Two days before: decide the shape

Choose a main, one generous side and something ready to put out while the final dish finishes. Ask about dietary needs early, then write a short shopping list grouped by store aisle. Check that six people can sit and that there are enough forks, glasses and serving utensils. Borrow or simplify rather than discovering a gap as the doorbell rings.

The day before: remove small decisions

Wash produce, make a dressing or sauce that keeps well, clear space in the refrigerator and set out serving dishes with a note naming each dish. Put drinks in a reachable place. Avoid preparing food farther ahead than its safe storage window; follow the recipe and refrigerate perishables promptly.

On the day: build in a pause

Three hours out, tidy the guest area and prep ingredients. Ninety minutes out, start anything that reheats well. Thirty minutes out, dress the table and put out water. Fifteen minutes out, stop adding tasks: set out a ready snack, wash your hands and greet people. Dinner can move by twenty minutes without breaking the evening.

Use what you own

A sheet pan, a pot and one serving bowl can carry a full menu. Plate directly from the pan in the kitchen if that is easier than finding matching platters. Ask one guest to bring a ready-to-serve dessert if that genuinely lightens the load.

Where this may not fit

This schedule is a planning model, not a food-safety instruction or a guarantee about cooking time. Check recipe temperatures and storage guidance. Larger menus, young children, mobility constraints or unfamiliar equipment may call for more preparation time.
